From Stay at Home Mom to Project Management and Coding: My Certifications Journey

I suck at side hustles. It’s just plain true, and I don’t get involved with MLMs even if they promised me Jeff Bezos kind of cash, because they’re just dishonest. I wish I could say I was some fabulous mommy living in a gorgeous apartment or house, with money for a random trip to Salt Lake City to shop every weekend, but I’m not. Instead, we currently live humbly, in a 1920’s boarding house turned studio apartment. It’s not glamorous, but it’s a roof over our heads while we get our bearings together after a rough two years.

I’m not a sit around and do nothing type of person though, nor a pull yourself up by your bootstraps type either; I’m a “bitch about it while trying to find a solution” type of woman. So how do I land a job after two years of not working to raise my babies, and no degree? Currently, I’m enrolled in two Coursera courses. One for Project Management, and the second for Front End Development. I’m hoping that after completing these courses I’ll be able to find a job.

Coursera currently offers two plans. one for $49 where you select the course you want to specialize in, and the other (Coursera Plus) for $59 where you can access all courses. I selected Coursera Plus because I knew I wanted to specialize in two courses instead of just one. I recommend the Plus option as it’s $10 more, but you get more bang for your buck and can access the other courses.

If you’re a stay at home mom, like myself, the top 3 courses I recommend are:

  1. Bookkeeping
  2. Front End or Back End Development
  3. Social Media Marketing or Management

I happen to enjoy coding, which is why I selected Front End Development, and I have Project Management experience from previous jobs, which made it easy for me to choose which courses to go with.

If you’re in the market to find out whether or not Coursera certifications will help you land a job, stick around, as when I finish my certifications in a few months I intend to update you all with whether or not I’m successful in finding a remote job in my area of certification.

Not including MLMs or UGC, what side hustle, certification, or degree has helped you work from home to be with your babies while earning an income? Let us know in the comments below and help a mom out!
